UPDATE: There has been a development in this story. About a month ago a representative from Staple Design reached out to me and what followed was a good conversation. Apparently my critique of their Truth1585 campaign was helpful to their cause! Having an honest (and far removed) pair of eyes evaluate the scope of the campaign was just what they needed before Staple’s next round of meetings with TheTruth.com. From those conversations there may be a chance for me to work with them on some future endeavors but I’ll cross that bridge when it happens. For me though, the conversations brought validity to what I’m trying to accomplish within streetwear–maybe there IS a happy medium between being fly and having something of substance to say. If I do get the chance to work with them, y’all will be the first people I tell. Regardless, I feel like I’m on the right path and I want to say a heartfelt “Thank You!” to everyone that’s been down with H1GHER LEARNING and its burgeoning movement from the beginning.
+ + + + + + + + +
Recently, noted designer and streetwear icon Jeff Staple launched a joint project with TheTruth.com entitled truth1585 to help the truth® in their mission to reveal the manipulation tactics corporations that manufacture and sell cigarettes are/have been using to market their product to the youth.
I decided to wait before I commented because A) I was interested in seeing if anyone besides me would have something to say about the project and B) I wanted to take in as much information as possible before I said anything.
Other than Jeff’s own blog posting which cited the inspiration of this collaboration, as far as I can see there has been absolutely no discussion on truth1585, just a bunch of sites blogging about the project’s existence.
Figures.
