I can’t speak for anyone else but I’m happy to be back on H1GHER LEARNING! I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving weekend and are looking forward to what the holiday/New Year is bringing your way.

For those of you that follow me on Twitter, no doubt you’ve seen my #TheBigMix hashtag floating around for the past month or so. Well, today I wanted to give yall a little insight on what The Big Mix is, why I want to do it, and how you can help.

Background info.

So, a while ago I was talking to one of my mentors, the fabulous Ayoka Lucas, and she told me that Charleston Fashion Week needs help. Not to say that the event is struggling–far from that–but what makes NY Fashion Week so dope is that other people feed off the energy and do their own thing.

Let’s face it, EVERYONE isn’t getting into Bryant Park but because there are thousands of bars and hotels in the Big Apple, people take it upon themselves to get in on the action.

CF/W is the South’s most popular week of its kind and even though it is awesome–the truth of the matter is, it ain’t for everybody! So I figured I put my money were my mouth is and do an event for the sneakers and tee shirt crowd. Since I’m all “Southern streetwear culture” and stuff–why not create something centered around that concept. That’s how The Big Mix is born.

What’s the purpose of The Big Mix?

The Big Mix is the first event, at least to my knowledge, created to celebrate Southern streetwear culture and companies.  I’ve found in my travels and conversations with different brands and retailers a startling revelation: we don’t know that there are others like us. There are brands in Nashville that know nothing about retailers in North Carolina. Just like there are brands in Atlanta that know nothing of retailers in Alabama.

It shocked me to say the least. So like I said, I figured I’d do something about it.

The plan is to invite brands, retailers, sneaker collectors, artist, and bloggers from all over the South to descend on the Holy City and strengthen our scene by networking and learning from like minded individuals.

Believe me, YOU ARE NOT ALONE! The problem is you think you are so you beat your head against the same wall that others have already marked with the sweat of their brow.

Am I promising you that if you come to this event you’re going to “get on” (whatever that means to you)? No. I imagine that it will be a while before this event starts pulling that kind of weight (I see you Janiro) but if that is to ever happen it has to start somewhere, right?

In conclusion…

So I’ll be in touch with you as far as the specifics are concerned but until that happens, stay in touch via Twitter and please subscribe to H1GHER LEARNING.

If you know of a dope brand in the South that might like to take part tell them to hit me up. Let’s make this thing work!

Talk to you soon…
