Guess what I did today? Bought a book. I can honestly say that I haven’t done that in a long time. And you know what, it felt good. Real good. Especially since this is a book that I will be able to pass down to my unborn son as well.

The book, Rules for My Unborn Son, is written by Walker Lamond, a writer and filmmaker although truth be told I’ve never actual read any of his previous publications nor seen any of his films (or maybe I have and didn’t know it was him). At any rate what he basically did was take  his popular blog (which I have visited on many occasions thank-you-very-much) 1001 Rules for my unborn son: let’s get some things straight before I get old and uncool, and put those words on paper. FYI: I am enjoying this book as much as his site.

The great thing about this book is that it’s REALLY stuff that a father would tell his son. Or at least things I would tell my son. While some of it is a tad bit extra: “Never eat the same meal twice in a row” or “Short pants are for little boys. Decide for yourself when you are a man.”, those quotes are far out weighed by much more sound advice such as: “When in doubt, wear a tie.”, “If you’re going to reinvent yourself, be original.”, and “Don’t be eager to leave the kids table.”

Priceless stuff.

There is even an appendix in the back that list both “Required Listening for Boys” (for example Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally” and The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations”) and “Essential Reading for Boys” that listed Sir Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories and Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer as must reads.  I like the list, but it should be pointed out tha there are some songs and books NOT on the list that my son must be up on (The entire “Abbey Road” album by the Beatles and The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss. No brainer.)

You want to know another reason why I’m proud of myself for buying the book? Because when this book dropped (October 27) I swear it made the rounds on EVERY SINGLE MAN-BLOG in existence. Well deserved publicity for a good book but I can’t image that every person that blogged about it actually went out and purchased the book. I mean, for goodness sakes I’m sure we were too busy blogging/Facebooking/Tweeting and the like to actually cop it. I know I was and I don’t even get paid to do any of that stuff. But thankfully I took the timeout the support Lamond’s work and put down my hard-earned $14.99 + South Carolina sales tax for a tome that should last my unborn son’s lifetime…or 2012, which ever comes first.
